2017 New Balance High School Outdoor Track & Field Nationals

Friday-Sunday, June 16-18, 2017
Greensboro, North Carolina

2017 Race Walk Report from Vince Peters:

Taylor Ewert, of Beavercreek, Ohio, exploded off the starting line in international fashion with an initial 200 meters in 50 seconds at this morning 10am race. SHadowing her from the gun was the senior, Kelsey Jordan of Wasthampton, NY. Margaret Atwood of Sachem East high school led the chase pack. Ewert was targeting the 41 year old national freshman high school record of 14:40.20. It has been held by California's Lisa Metheny since 1976.

Farmingdale's Tara Mandel caught both Jordan and Atwood to lead the chase group thru one kilometer in 4:48. Ewert's adrenalin burst had brought her through the initial kilometer 10 seconds quicker in 4:38. Click here to read the complete report.

Records Galore fall at University of Findlay

Records galore fell last night as Southwest Ohio Track Club teammates, Taylor Ewert and Cameron Haught, broke long standing state and national high school records in the Olympic track & field event of Race Walking.

Ewert, who is 15 year old ninth grader at Beavercreek High School, walked thru the first 400 meters of the 3,000 meter event on the 200m circuit within Malcom Athletic Center on the University of Findlay campus in just one minute and 50 seconds. She then settled into the rhythmic pace for which elite walking is known. The six-time USATF Junior Olympic National Champion next posted an official mark of 7:37.67 for her 1600m split. Ewert, who is also the number one harrier on her high school’s cross country team, would finish 80 seconds up on second. Her final time of 14:37.57 would break the all-time Ohio HS indoor record of 14:50.7 for 3000 meters.

It is also a new National High School Record for the long-legged lass. Ewert’s winning time breaks the old Freshman record of 15:07.50 established by Lewiston, Maine's Kayla Allen almost 3 years ago.

Cameron Haught, an 18 year old senior at Greenon HS in Enon, Ohio, already has both the all-time Freshman and Sophomore high school national records in the 3,000m walk. So, he was bound and determined to break the Senior record of 12:44.81 held by New Jersey’s Zach Pollinger since 2004. But his ultimate goal was the All-Time high school best of 12:34.6. That record has been held by 2004 Olympian Kevin Eastler, of Mt Blue, Maine, since his junior year in high school in 1995.

Cameron Haught led the US U20 Men's Team in Rome

Ohio Association's own Cameron Haught led the US U20 men's team this morning at the 10k distance of the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships Rome 2016.

Cameron, a junior at Greenon High School, finished 41st with a Personal Best of 45:4 in a field of 57 competitors from around the world. Team mates Alexander Bellavance  and Anthony Gruttadauro finished 49th and 53rd.

Go to www.iaaf.org to verify results and for additional information.

Cameron Haught Wins USATF's 10K Race Walk Trials

Cameron Haught (Junior, Greenon HS) raced this past weekend (April 3, 2016) representing the Southwest Ohio Track Club in the UASTF's 10k Race Walk Trials. Cameron won the 10k race and posted a new personal best time of 43:55, the 3rd fastest 10k for a US junior athlete all-time. This was a 1:44 PR for Cameron, besting his 45:39 time he posted in San Diego at the beginning of the year.

Cameron's time and win puts him on the US World Cup Junior team which will compete in Rome, Italy in early May.

Even better, his time eclipses the standard (44:20) to be included in the World Juniors event this summer to be held in Poland. Those of you who have watched our workouts know the kind of effort Cameron (and Michael Belovich) have been putting in this past winter.

It is great great to see that he will be representing the USA and the SWOTC on the world stage.

As a note, during the 10k, Cameron led a pack of 4 through the wind, and helped lead Maria Michta to a new 10k Women's American Record. Maria crossed the 10k point in 44:08, besting the old record by about 8 seconds.

Thanks to Eric Brickson for the contribution of the above article.

A Letter To High School Athletes About Race Walking In College

By Vinc Peters, Former National Chairman of USATF Race Walking
(Last Update: October, 2014)

High School track and field athletes in general and high school race walkers in particular, need to be made aware that there is a shortage of race walkers in the USA. There are currently more colleges needing race walkers for their Track & Field teams then there are HS walkers in the USA. As a result, some colleges are now recruiting race walkers from other countries to walk here in the USA. This fact is presented only to stress the point that high school race walkers are an important commodity to many colleges.

What does it take to be a collegiate walker? Continue Reading
